Aviation – a year in review

As the financial year draws to a close, we reflect on another eventful 12 months and also take a look forward to what’s in store for the aviation industry.

Thankfully, the issues that the industry faced in the summer of 2022 when passengers returned to airports were not in evidence in the summer of 2023. Lessons had been learned and the long queues and delays that we had seen previously were, in the main, absent and there was no question that the passenger experience was a lot smoother this time round.

The Airports Council International have revised and upgraded their economic forecast for 2024 to show a full recovery in passenger traffic to 2019 levels. The year 2024 is expected to be a milestone for global passenger traffic recovery as it reaches 9.4 billion passengers, surpassing the 2019 total of 9.2 billion passengers.

As a result of the increase in passengers, airport capacity is once again an issue and one of our priorities at AiQ over the last year has been helping airports with the challenges this issue brings. The predicted growth in passenger numbers over the next few years is an opportunity for airport operators and stakeholders to increase profits but it also represents a risk if airport infrastructure is unable to cope with increased traffic. Our award winning team of operational and analytical experts are dedicated to analysing, modelling and optimising every aspect of an airport. As we look ahead it is clear that sustainability and net zero carbon are being pushed still further to the top of the industry agenda and are common themes running through a lot of project planning we are undertaking. This follows the global industry’s commitment to reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050. One of our highlights of the last 12 months was our Net Zero Heathrow Supplier award win which you can read more about below.
